Research conducted at the University of Virginia,
presented to the Association for Psychological Science
About this document: This poster is the fruit of a collaborative research project with colleagues in cognitive and social psychology. In our department, graduate students are often responsible for overseeing the undergraduate Research Assistants in their lab. Since RAs receive course credit for this work, we wanted to explore how we could counsel graduate students so that the experience would be as educational as possible.
As a first step in this project, we conducted a survey with a sample of RAs in the psychology department. RAs were generally satisfied with the educational quality of their experience, and predictably wished for more interaction with professors, but surprisingly also wanted to be more involved in data analysis – a stage in research where RAs’ involvement typically ends.
