University of Virginia, Department of Psychology
About this course: I taught three discussion sections (20 students each) as an weekly independent supplement to a large lecture course in child development (250 students).
About this document: This unsolicited email came from a student in my liveliest discussion section. The class always managed to participate actively while maintaining appropriate decorum and respect for others. However, in this case my student was concerned she might have been too “incendiary.” I reassured her that she was in line and that I appreciated her participation – even on controversial topics.

American School of Languages (Belem, Brazil)
About this course: I taught ESL (beginning through advanced) to students ranging from middle school to adult.
About this document: Assigned a free-topic essay, this student chose to write about her experience in English class that semester. She admits that she has received the lowest test grade of her entire academic career in my class. Still, she asserts that this is the semester in which she has learned the most English, and indeed changed her view of studying English (to aim beyond grades).
Note: the handwritten essay scans unevenly, and has been overwritten to improve legibility (see original).
